MORIGAON: Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary located in the Morigaon district of Assam will reopen for the public from Tuesday. State Forest and Environment Minister Parimal Suklabaidya, in presence of local MLA Pijush Hazarika and senior government officers, has formally declared the reopening of the renowned sanctuary in that state that was closed down for 6 months following the COVID-19 outbreak.

"We are today reopening Pobitora and urging tourists to once again return to Pobitora. It is a beautiful wildlife sanctuary. If you come here, you will witness all the flora and fauna from Assam. We would love to host people from India and, in fact, across the world, to the Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary," said Forest Minister Suklabaidya.

During the re-opening, Suklabaidya also stated that all the COVID-19 safety rules are being strictly adhered to in the wildlife sanctuary.

The Minister also announced that the roads leading to the Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary have been given a major facelift. "Perhaps we will not be able to complete all the works before the elections come knocking, but we have some grand designs to improve the road connectivity to make lives easier for the tourists," he said.

The finances of all the National Parks and sanctuaries in Assam -- including Pobitora -- have taken a hit due to the anti Citizenship Amendment Act and subsequent COVID-19 lockdowns. However, with an eye on restoring tourism activities in the state, the Government has started opening up these attractions to the public.
