NEW DELHI: India's three-member water sports delegation, which includes two male swimmers and female canoe sprint athlete is confident that they will deliver their best performances at the Paralympic Games in Tokyo.

Suyash Jadhav will compete in his second Paralympic Games, while Niranjan Mukundan and Prachi Yadav will compete for the first time on the biggest stage in Tokyo.

All three are part of the Olympic Podium Target Scheme (TOPS).

Suyash Jadhav's win in the Men's 50m Butterfly S7 (32.71 seconds) at the 2018 Asian Para Games in Jakarta guaranteed him spot in the Tokyo Paralympics.

Indeed, his bronze medal in the Men's 200m Individual Medley SM7 (2:51.39) there earned him spot in the event at the Tokyo Paralympics.

Suyash, who is now swim coach at the Maharashtra Directorate of Sports and Youth Affairs, has been training at the Balewadi Stadium under the watchful eye of his coach Tapan Panigrahi.

He has received assistance from the Government of India in terms of Foreign Exposure, where he has participated in more than five International Competitions as well as National Coaching Camps with sports science support and sports equipment.

He won one gold and two bronze medals at the Asian Para Games in Indonesia in 2018 as well as the Eklavya Award in 2018 and the Arjuna Award in 2020.

While Suyash’s 200m Individual Medley SM7 event is scheduled for August 27, he will be in action again along with Niranjan Mukundan in the Men’s 50m Butterfly S7 events on September 3.

Murlikant Petkar, for the record, became the first Indian athlete to win Paralympic medal when he won gold in the 50m Freestyle in Heidelberg, Germany.

The International Paralympic Committee awarded Niranjan, 26-year-old banker, bipartite spot in the Games earlier this month.

He has over 60 international medals and is the only Paralympic swimmer with more than 50 medals.

Niranjan has received government assistance in the form of foreign exposure trips and participation in national coaching camps with sports science support.

Meanwhile, Prachi Yadav, 26, became the first Indian woman to be accepted into the Paralympic Games Canoeing competition.

She will take part in the Women’s VL2 200m Heats on September 2, with the semis and final scheduled the next day.

In May 2019, she made her international debut at the ICF Para Canoe World Cup in Poznan, Poland, finishing eighth after advancing past the first round and semifinal runs. She later advanced to the semifinals of the ICF Para Canoe World Championships in Szeged, Hungary, in August 2019.

Prachi, who is physically challenged below her waist and trains with Mayank Singh Thakur at Lowe Lake in Bhopal, has also received key interventions from the Government of India in terms of participation in international competitions and national coaching camps, as well as sports science support and equipment.
