GUWAHATI: Badruddin Ajmal, Member of Parliament from Dhubri and the supremo of the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) has expressed his "happiness" at the appointment of Lurin Jyoti Gogoi as the President of the Asom Jatiya Parishad (or AJP).

"A new regional party has taken shape in Assam. I am very happy that Lurin Jyoti Gogoi has been given charge of the new party," Ajmal stated in a video earlier, after Gogoi was given the reins of the new regional party.

Earlier, Congress President Ripun Bora had exhorted the AJP to become a part of its 'grand alliance' that is also expected to feature the AIUDF, and all parties seek to unseat the AGP-BJP-BPF combine. The BPF is likely to be dropped from the alliance at the end of its 5-year tenure.

The sudden death of veteran Congress leader Tarun Gogoi (who was in favour of the alliance) has cast doubt on the possible alliance between Congress and AIUDF parties.

Former Assam Congress MLA, Mohibul Haque recently stated that Congress chief Sonia Gandhi will take the final call on a possible alliance between the party and All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF).

However, AIUDF chief and Lok Sabha MP, Badruddin Ajmal as well as other state-level congress leaders were confident about the alliance.

The alliance took a severe beating in the BTC (where they were contesting together) as only a lone candidate representing the two parties won the election. Somewhat bizarrely, that candidate too deserted the Congress-AIUDF combine, and joined the BJP.
