SIVASAGAR: Chhattisgarh chief minister Bhupesh Baghel today questioned the audacity of the Narendra Modi government at the Centre for trying to privatise assets of Assam in favour of some business houses the BJP serves for.

Addressing a rally attended by Congress central leader Rahul Gandhi at Boarding Field here, Baghel said the Centre was working only in the interest of business expansion of a few capitalists and Assam, being one of the resourceful states, has always been a target of the Centre.

“The BJP today questions what did the Congress do in last 70 years? I say the Congress built the country over the past 70 years. And the BJP is now selling it. Is the railway station in Assam (Kamakhya station in Guwahati) that you are selling, built by your paternal grandfather? Is the airport (LGBI Airport in Guwahati) that you are selling, built by your maternal grandfather? Had the oil companies you are selling, came as your marriage dowry?” Baghel asked the Modi government.

Calling the BJP a party of jumlas (false promises), Baghel said: “The BJP had made some tall promises before it came to power. They paid Rs 3000 to each tea worker household with elections round the corner. But, what about the remaining Rs 14.97 lakh that the prime minister had promised before coming to power in 2014?”

Alleging that there were vast differences in promises and deliverability in the BJP ruled states, he cited the example of his own state. “When my government was sworn in, Rahulji came to attend it. He asked us to waive loans of the farmers because it was our pre-poll promise. After seeing off Rahulji at the airport, I returned straight to the secretariat, called a cabinet meeting and waived off loads of 19 lakh  formers to the tune of Rs 10,000 crore even before Rahulji landed at New Delhi airport. This is the commitment of the Congress towards the people and in keeping our promises.”

Baghel dethroned the BJP after 15 years of rule in Chhattisgarh in December 2017.
