Guwahati, January 18, 2019:

A 12-hour bandh has been called in Golaghat today by three organizations, namely, the Chutia Students’ Association, Satra Mukti Sangram Samiti and the Jatiyatabadi Yuva Parishad.

The organizations are seeking the release of some leaders such as Mahen Bora, Bidyut Saikia, Asama Bora and Rajib Laskar who were taking into custody during the protests against the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill 2016. The protestors burned tyres and shouted slogans seeking the release of their leaders.

“At a time when BJP government is looking to burden Assam with lakhs of Bangladeshis, we implore people to support us in our stand against the jati destroying Citizenship (Amendment) Bill”, stated a protestor.

Bandhs have become commonplace in the state ever since Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced the saffron party’s intention to pass the contentious Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016 in Parliament.

Agitations and protests which began in the state since the announcement have hardly shown a sign of slowing down.

Apart from Assam, other states in the Northeast too have shown their displeasure at the Bill, with umbrella student body North East Students’ Union (NESO) calling a bandh on January 8.
