Bangladesh Orders Suspension of Mobile Network in Areas Along Indian Border

Dhaka, December 31, 2019:

The Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) has ordered the shutdown of mobile network services along the border with India, citing security reasons affecting an estimate of nearly 10 million users, said reported.

The decision was taken after a high-level meeting of the government, reports said.

The mobile network has been suspended by the operator within one kilometer of the borders with India on Monday after receiving the order.

Reportedly, the operators- Grameenphone, Teletalk, Robi and Banglalink closed around 2,000 base transceiver stations which are expected to create problems for around 10 million users along the border.

The Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission in its order stated that network coverage in the border areas will have to be suspended until further notice for the sake of the country’s security in the current circumstances.

However, the direction for suspension of the network is temporary.
