Guwahati: Assam's Finance, Health, and Education Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Saturday sounded the alarm after a Bengali-medium school located near the Assam-Mizoram border was torched by miscreants amid simmering tensions between the two states.

Sharing a TOI article about the incident that reportedly took place on Friday, Sarma tagged Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Silchar MP Rajdeep Roy, and Mizoram's Chief Minister Zoramthanga. The Minister termed this development as "disturbing news."

A bomb blast hit a Bengali-medium school at Saihapui V village in Mizoram's Kolasib district late on Thursday night, Mizoram DIG (Northern Range) Lalbiakthanga Khingte said. He added that miscreants used gelatin to destroy the building., Although there are no casualties, this incident has caused the already prevailing tensions in the bordering area to rise even higher.

Khiangte has been camping in Vairengte town since the violence broke out at Saihapui V and Vairengte town last Saturday. A case has been registered at the Vairengte police station.

"No one has claimed responsibility for the attack. Some say it was attacked by Mizos, but no witnesses actually saw what happened. It has been gathered that locals heard a loud sound and when they came out, the school was in flames," a source informed Inside Northeast.

The source further said that the Mizoram troops stationed along the border are yet to be withdrawn in spite of assurances from the Assam government.
