GUWAHATI: On the occasion of the 95th birth anniversary of the legendary music maestro Bharat Ratna Dr. Bhupen Hazarika, the Bhupen Hazarika Samadhi Khetra Memorial in Jalukbari, Guwahati, has been reopened today for visitors.

The Samadhi Khetra will reopen abiding by all the COVID-19 protocol, said Assam Health and Family Welfare Minister Keshab Mahanta.

Due to the novel coronavirus pandemic, the Bhupen Hazarika Smadhi Khetra was closed for several months.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, Minister Keshab Mahanta paid their rich tribute to the legendary singer.

CM Sarma took to Twitter and wrote, "Paid rich tributes to legendary music maestro Bharat Ratna Dr Bhupen Hazarika on his 95th birth anniversary. May the timeless and universal compositions of the Bard of Brahmaputra continue to inspire humanity for generations to come."

Bhupen Hazarika, also known as Xudha kontho (meaning cuckoo, literally "nectar-throated") was born on September 8, 1926, in Tinsukia district of Assam.

He was an Indian playback singer, lyricist, musician, poet, and filmmaker from Assam (meaning cuckoo, literally "nectar-throated").

He was also known as the 'Bard of Brahmaputra' because of his evergreen songs.

In 2011, Hazarika was admitted to the Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital and Medical Research Institute in Mumbai. On June 30, 2011, he was admitted to the intensive care unit, and later he died of multi-organ failure on 5 November 2011.

Awards and Honors of Bhupen Hazarika: 

  • President's medal in 1960 for his films Shakuntala (1960), Pratidhwani (1964), and Lotighoti (1965). (1967).
  • He served in the Assam Legislative Assembly from 1967 to 1972.
  • He won the National Award for Best Music Director for Chameli Memsaab in 1976.
  • Padma Shri was bestowed upon him in 1977.
  • In 1979, he received the Arunachal Pradesh Government's Gold Medal for his contribution to tribal welfare and cultural upliftment through cinema.
  • Sangeet Natak Akademy Award in 1987.
  • He was the chairman of the Sangeet Natak Akademy from 1999 to 2004.
  • In addition, he served on the Assam Film Development Council and the Central Board of Film Certification.
  • In 2003, he was appointed to the Prasar Bharati Board of Directors.
  • In 1992, he received the prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke Award.
  • He was awarded the Padma Bhushan in 2001.
  • In 2009, he received the Asom Ratna award.
  • In 2012, posthumously, he was awarded the Padma Vibhushan.
  • In 2019, posthumously, he was awarded the Bharat Ratna.
