PATNA: With the counting of votes of the Bihar elections officially underway, the fate of the Nitish Kumar-led Government officially hangs in the balance. The Government, which has been in power for a decade and a half, is taking on the 'Mahagathbandhan' which is seeking to end the National Democratic Alliance's (NDA) reign at the top.

The Bihar election in 2020 is expected to be a direct contest between the NDA and the 'Mahagathbandhan', with pollsters giving an early edge to the latter.

Counting of votes has begun across 38 districts from 8 am today. Bihar Assembly Election 2020 is a direct contest between the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) and Mahagathbandhan. From the 'grand alliance', RJD is contesting in 144 seats, Congress in 70, and left parties in 29. From the NDA, the JD(U) is contesting in 115 seats and BJP in 110

For either of the two alliances to win, they have to secure the 'magic figure' of 122 in the 243-member House.

With much of election narrative of Prime Minister Narendra Modi - the star campaigner for NDA - focusing on the RJD's association with "jungle raj", the fate of "bahubalis", leaders known for strong arm tactics, will be keenly watched.

The anti-incumbency sentiment and the Nitish government’s handling of COVID-19 are factors that could play a major role this time. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has campaigned extensively for the incumbent and it is to be seen whether the PM's "magic touch" will pay off this time.

As of 10:15 am in the morning, the NDA is leading in 113 seats, while the RJD-led mahagathbandhan is ahead in 112 seats, according to CNN-News18. LJP is now leading in 2 seats.
