Guwahati, May 31, 2019:

Binny, India's lone orangutan, has died in the at the Nandan Kanan Zoological Park located on the on the outskirts of Odisha’s capital Bhubaneswar.

The orangutan was being treated for old-age related complications and it has been reported that she died due to a respiratory illness.

Binny was brought to the zoo from the Rajiv Gandhi Zoological Park in Pune in 2003. She had been flown in to Pune from Singapore.

Veterinary doctors from the College of Veterinary Science and Animal Husbandry were treating her under the advice of the orangutan experts from England and Singapore.

The orangutans are three extant species of great apes native to Indonesia and Malaysia. Orangutans are currently only found in the rainforests of Borneo and Sumatra.

The orangutans are the most arboreal of the great apes -- meaning, they like to spend most of their time on trees.

Trivia: The name orangutan comes from two Malay words, orang which means person, and hutan which means forest; so orangutan means person of the forest.
