Guwahati, February 11, 2019:

The protests against the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill have been gathering steam in the Northeastern region of India ever since the day it was passed in the Lok Sabha on January 8.

Commenting on the issue of the Bill being raised at the Rajya Sabha, Rajya Sabha MP Biswajit Daimary said: “There are no updates regarding the raising of the bill at Rajya Sabha yet. BPF has not taken any decision regarding the Bill. We will only take a decision regarding the Bill if it is raised and passed at the Rajya Sabha. As BPF represent the Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC), the Citizenship Bill will not affect lives much there, so we have not formed any opinions regarding the Bill”.

“Many political parties have been staging protests against the bill and they must stick with their opposition to the Bill if they want it to be scrapped. A 2/3rd majority is required to pass the bill, but if everyone who is standing against the Bill sticks to their decision, they will form a majority and the Bill will not pass. It’s very important to stick with the decision, instead walking away from the House and boycotting the session” Daimary added.

Many political leaders from Assam and North-East have been strongly opposing the Bill and sources have confirmed that Home Minister Rajnath Singh will conduct a meet with all the Chief Ministers of Northeast to discuss the Bill before it is launched at the Rajya Sabha. Students Organization (NESO) delegates Meghalaya CM Conrad Sangma and other important ministers rush to the capital city New Delhi in order to garner support against the bill.
