DISPUR: With less than a month to go till elections are held in the Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC), Rajya Sabha MP Biswajit Daimary has officially left the Bodoland People's Front (BPF) on Wednesday (November 11). He is likely to join the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) very soon.

This comes days after after Assam Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had announced that the dynamic leader would be shifting camps ahead of the high-voltage polls.

Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of an election rally in Udalguri’s Harisinga village on November 9, Biswa Sarma had said, “Biswajit Daimary and Emmanuel Mushahary shall both be joining the BJP party very soon. Since Biswajit Daimary is a member of the Rajya Sabha, we will have to fix a date and time for his joining. His body and soul are both with the BJP already.”

Although the BPF is allied with the BJP at the Centre and is a part of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), both parties have been going hammer and tongs in the poll-bound BTC region, where the election is likely to go down to the wire.

According to sources, BPF Chief Hagrama and Daimary had some disagreements after the signing of the tripartite Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR) treaty signed on January 27 last. Although Hagrama was one of the key signatories of the treaty that led to the disbanding of the National Democratic Front of Bodoland, it is believed that he was not on board with some of the conditions of the treaty.

In the ensuing months, the gulf between the BPF -- three time rulers of the BTC -- and the BJP, has been widening. In the ensuing polls to the 40-member Council, the BJP has fielded its own set of candidates, and it is believed that Daimary will soon be floated as the CEM candidate. Himanta Biswa Sarma had recently declared during a rally that the next CEM in the BTC region would be from the BJP party.

Daimary is expected to make the formal announcement at a press conference that he has called in Guwahati.
