Guwahati, May 20, 2019:

Rajya Sabha MP Biswajit Daimary discussed the issues of insurgency plaguing the Northeast region after the ULFA-claimed blast in the busy Zoo Road area of Guwahati on May 15 where as many twelve persons, including two SSB jawans, were injured.

The MP said that the recent blast is rather unfortunate despite the talks which have been going on to resolve these issues. The MP also stated that the Government needs specific policies to bring the talks closer to a solution. The pro-talks situation is rather long, he said, and the interlocutors have been given all the facilities to continue the talk process.

Daimary said it is unfortunate that despite talks going on for so long, Pranamoy Rajguru has admitted to breaking the peace and expressed shock that a pro-talks ULFA leader could carry out an act of such destruction despite being in the Government's eye. "He can go anywhere he wants, stay anywhere he wants. If people like him commit acts of violence, it is a matter of grave concern. He took advantage of the opportunities accorded by the Government. What the Government should do is monitor the interlocutors' activities to review the talk process."

The MP has stated that the Government should keep in touch with the interlocutors and ask what kind of communication is going on with the militants who are on the talks table. "If they show signs of anger...dissatisfaction...the interlocutor should inform the Government, so that steps can be taken." He further questioned what the interlocutors have been doing as there have been no solutions to the Northeastern insurgency problems despite there being many years of talks between the Government and the various militant groups such as the NSCN, NDFB, and ULFA.

Biswajit Daimary also said that the Government should take measures to curb the 'gun culture' which is prevalent in the Northeastern States.
