Guwahati, March 26, 2019:

The BJP has finally chosen Rupak Sarmah, the sitting MLA of Nagaon Sadar Constituency, as its candidate to contest the key battleground Lok Sabha Constituency of Nowgong on behalf of the party.

Nowgong (Nagaon) will go to the polls during the second phase of the Lok Sabha elections on April 18. The other strong contender from the Constituency is Congress candidate and former Minister Pradyut Borodoloi. Both candidates are expected to file their nominations today.

It may be mentioned sitting MP Rajen Gohain will not contest the elections in 2019 as he had been battling rape charges up until recently (the charges were dropped on Monday). As per reports, Gohain lobbied hard in Delhi to secure the ticket for his wife, Rita Gohain, but to no avail.

The Nowgong Lok Sabha constituency is composed of the following Assembly segments: Jagiroad (SC), Marigaon, Lahiraghat, Raha (SC), Nagaon, Barhampur, Jamunamykh, Hojai and Lumdig.
