GUWAHATI: The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) discussed increasing the number of members in Assam from 42 lakh to 60 lakh on Wednesday, as well as expanding the number of organizational districts in the state from 39 to 45 in a bid to further strengthen the party in the state.

This was discussed on the first day of the state executive meeting held at Amingaon near Guwahati.

Assam BJP chief Bhabesh Kalita said, “We need to strengthen our party even more. For the second time in a row, we have constituted the state government. It was proposed at our office-bearers' meeting that our organizational districts be increased from 39 to 45."

“The Assam BJP today has 42 lakh members, and we plan to expand that number to 60 lakh in a short period of time. Many more decisions were made, and they will all be passed during the two-day state executive meeting," said Kalita.

Meanwhile, Union minister Minister and former Chief Minister of Assam Sarbananda Sonowal dismissing the rumors of a feud with Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said, "We talk on the phone on a regular basis and discuss key issues.”

H further said, "We are both devoted BJP members. I appear you all to follow him and do as the party's leader directs and disseminate information on the accomplishments of the Central and state governments.”

Minister Sonowal also praised his successor for his “relentless” operations against the drug supply network in the fight against the drug epidemic.

On the other hand, CM sarma said that Sonowal had efficiently managed the state for the past five years and that his administration had set numerous records on a variety of fronts.
