Guwahati, March 24, 2019:

In a latest development, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which is part of the ruling Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA), has announced that it will throw its support behind the National People’s Party (NPP) candidate from Tura Constituency Agatha Sangma, who is the sister of current Meghalaya Chief Minister and NPP President Conrad K Sangma and the daughter of former Meghalaya CM, the late P A Sangma.

The seat in Tura is expected to be a two-way contest between Agatha Sangma and former Meghalaya CM Mukul Sangma. It may be mentioned that Agatha was elected twice to the Lok Sabha from Tura and was a Minister during Manmohan Singh’s UPA-II Government.

"We have decided to support the NPP candidate in Tura parliamentary constituency since the party leadership has decided not to field a candidate," state BJP President of Meghalaya Shibun Lyngdoh told IANS.

Since we are not putting up any candidate in Tura, I will be issuing instructions to party cadres to support the NPP candidate as we cannot support a Congress nominee”, Lyngdoh added.

The BJP party will field Meghalaya legislator from South Shillong Constituency, Sanbor Shullai, to contest the election for the Shillong Lok Sabha seat, where incumbent Vincent Pala from Congress and Jemino Mawthoh from the UDP are the two strongest contenders.
