'BJP wants to impose CAA on Assam after polls', warns Ripun Bora

GUWAHATI: Ripun Bora, the president of the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC), claims that the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is planning to implement the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) after the Assembly polls, tentatively scheduled for March-April.

"Every day Himanta Biswa Sarma gives a different statement on CAA. The contradictory statements are proof of the BJP’s ill intentions. They want to impose CAA on Assam after elections. The people understand this. That’s why they are voting the Congress into power," he said in a tweet.

Ripun Bora was responding to Biswa Sarma's latest comments on the 'CAA' during the launch of his latest book ‘Eta Xopunor Pom Khedi’ -- a compilation of 25 speeches made by the Minister.

"During framing of CAA rules, balance will be maintained between advantages of Hindu immigrants and interests of Assamese people," Biswa Sarma said after the release, responding to a query.

Meanwhile, the Congress party has made the 'CAA' its chief poll plank, with party leader Rahul Gandhi assuring that the controversial Act would never be implemented if the party comes to power.

To mark its stand against the 'CAA', the party has sought to collect 'gamusas' with anti-CAA messages from across Assam.

The Assam Congress on Wednesday directed its workers to visit every house of the state and collect gamosas with anti-CAA messages, which will be displayed at the proposed ‘Martyrs’ Memorial’ that the Grand Old Party pland to set up in Guwahati.

Furthermore, the Congress on Tuesday announced plans to build a memorial to commemorate those who died in the anti-CAA protests in Assam in December 2019. Several Congress leaders — including MP Gaurav Gogoi, MP Pradyut Bordoloi, Assam Pradesh Congress Committee President, Ripun Bora — took to Twitter to make the announcement.
