GUWAHATI: Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal did not respond clearly to a question asked about Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) Chief Ministerial candidate (Assam CM Candidate) for Assam Assembly Election 2021.

CM Sonowal had arrived at Taj Vivanta, Guwahati to attend a book launch event held by BJP. NEDA convenor Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma had translated Dr. Anirban Ganguly's "Amit Shah and the March of BJP".

Addressing media on the sidelines of the event, CM Sonowal, responding to a question about why BJP is not projecting any CM candidate this time, said, "This is up to the party and the parliamentary court. Why are you worried?"

Asked if one needs to be a non-Brahmin from Upper Assam to become the chief minister candidate from the BJP party, Sonowal said: “This is a question that should not be raised. Our party BJP is genuinely like a democratic party and we believe in people’s democracy. That's it.”

As the dates for the Assam assembly election 2021 get closer, curiosity among the citizens about a potential CM has piqued.

None of the political parties from Assam have announced their CM candidates yet. People were seeing Gaurav Gogoi as a probable candidate from the Grand Alliance keeping his father, three times CM, Late Tarun Gogoi's reputation in mind.

And from BJP, people are witnessing Himanta Biswa Sarma's increasing popularity, especially among the youth, due to his viral 'memes' all over social media.

But since BJP had not hinted at any changes, the public was pretty convinced about Sarbananda Sonowal being the next Assam CM candidate from the party again.

But with Sonowal's statement today, it appears that the party is still testing the waters before projecting someone as chief minister. In 2016, the BJP had announced its CM candidate before to the election.
