LUCKNOW:  Days after dead bodies of alleged COVID patients were spotted floating on the Ganga river in Bihar and eastern Uttar Pradesh, reports on finding multiple bodies buried in sand at two locations by the same river in Uttar Pradesh's Unnao district, just 40 kilometres from the state capital Lucknow have emerged.

Many buried bodies were seen with locals looking on in mobile phone visuals from both locations; most of the bodies were covered in a saffron cloth.

According to reports, at least one of the locations is a big cremation spot for three districts, including Unnao, and there is no proof that the bodies are those of Covid patients.

"Some people bury the corpses in the sand by the river rather than burning them. I dispatched officials to the scene after receiving details. I've asked them to conduct an investigation, and we'll take appropriate action " said Ravindra Kumar, the district magistrate.

The sight of dead bodies floating last two days in the Ganga river in Uttar Pradesh’s Ghazipur and Bihar’s Buxar has caused panic among locals who fear the bodies are those of deceased COVID patients.

According to Bihar Minister Sanjay Kumar Jha, 71 bodies were recovered from the Ganga in Buxar district and their last rites were performed and a net was put in the river in Ranighat, on the UP-Bihar border, to prevent a repeat of the incident.
