TANGLA: United People's Party Liberal (UPPL) Chief Promod Boro, in a recent interaction with INSIDE NORTHEAST claimed that the Bodo community is no longer with the Bodoland People's Front (BPF) and therefore, the BPF's shop will be shut "soon."

"No Bodos are with the BPF. A few leaders are running their shop and Hagrama Mohilary has been cheating the people from that shop. However, after the polls, that shop will be shut down," he said.

"BPF has failed in maintaining peace and harmony in the region. They also failed in maintaining unity in the region. Secondly, many people lost their lives in the region. They were unable to provide security. They also failed in securing the rights of the communities of Assam," Boro said, adding that the land rights, job rights, etc, are also being deprived.

Boro also said that the 17 years of the BPF government is a "black chapter" in the history of the region, going on to condemn the party's leadership -- including Hagrama and Minister Chandan Brahma -- of misleading the people on the BTR pact, which, he feels, is a "wonderful treaty."

Speaking on the "Bodo-Obodo' politics, Bodo said that the non-Bodo communities have been excluded from the mainstraem. "There is nothing called Bodo or non-Bodo -- someone has been created by people with vested interests."

The former student leader, lauding the tripartite Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR), Bodo said that if the tenets of the treaty are fulfilled, "there will be no need for the people of the region to take to the streets to protest."

The BTC region will see a three-cornered contest in December, with the UPPL, BJP, and BPF locking horns in the 40-member Council.

It needs mention here that the Election Commission of Assam on Tuesday declared the dates of the upcoming polls in the Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) which were delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Alok Kumar, the State Election Commissioner of Assam, today announced that the BTC election shall be held in two phases — on December 7 and 10.
