TAMULPUR: Ending all speculations, Rangja Khungur Basumatary alias Ram Das Basumatary has joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the presence of Union Agriculture minister Narendra Singh Tomar at Tamulpur today evening.

Ranja Khungur Basumatary moments earlier arrived at Tamulpur along with BJP former Tamulpur MLA Emmanuel Mochahary.

Asked about his decision to quit the party ahead of the election, he said: "I have quit the BPF of my own free will. And moreover, I did not receive enthusiastic support from any of the workers. Moreover, there is also the question of expenditure. I reached out to former MLA Mosahary and told him that I cannot contest the election."

Asked about his current affiliation, he said that has reached out to Biswa Sarma and former MLA Mosahary.

As far as the ensuing Assembly election is concerned, Basumatary said, electors should vote for the United People's Party Liberal (UPPL) candidate Leho Ram Bodo.

"Since I am no longer in the fray, the electorate should vote for the UPPL's Leho Ram Bodo and hope he does good work for the Constituency."

Basumatary remained untraceable yesterday morning, leading party workers to speculate that he could have been ‘hijacked’ by some other political party.

BPF leader and former executive member Ganesh Kachary said the party had gotten the information that Basumatary has left for Guwahati to “work out a financial deal” to join the BJP or UPPL.

Despite the setback, the BPF party remains undeterred and will go ahead with the election.

“Not a single non-Bodo will vote for the BJP-UPPL in the constituency. So we’ve doubled our effort from today to ensure that the BPF symbol, plough, wins so that his victory will be annulled under anti-defection law and by-election will be held here. We’ll deprive him of being the MLA for his own greed,” Kachary told media persons.
