Breaking: 3 more from Sikkim test Positive for COVID-19 in New Delhi

Gangtok, May 3, 2020:

Sikkim Health Secratary Dr Pempa Tshering Bhutia in his regular health bulletin earlier today informed that 4 people from the State have tested positive for the novel coronavirus in New Delhi's Denzong Kunga Khangsang (DKK) Bhawan.

Earlier on April 28, a 37-year-old kidney patient who was staying at the guest house had tested positive for the coronavirus.

According to a letter written by the Assistant Director (Nursing) of DKK Bhawan to the Resident Commissioner of Sikkim, the lady had a COVID-19 test done on a routine basis for all dialysis patients who were undergoing treatement.

Around 9:40 pm, the patient’s relative got a call from the hospital saying that she had tested positive and needed to be tested to the hospital for treatment.

This development assumes extra significance as the state of Sikkim is the only one in left in India with any cases of the deadly virus.

Meanwhile, cases of the COVID-19 continue to rise in India. Delhi on Sunday registered its highest single-day spike in coronavirus cases with 427 new infections, taking the COVID-19 tally to 4,549. India registered a record jump of 83 deaths and 2,487 cases in 24 hours as the number of COVID-19 fatalities rose to 1,306 and total cases climbed to 40,263 on Sunday, according to the Union health ministry.

In the Northeast, Tripura has reported 14 cases in the last two days.

Tripura Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb has confirmed that altogether 12 persons from the 138 Battalion of Border Security Forces (BSF) tested positive for the coronavirus, taking the state’s tally up to 16.

Taking to Twitter earlier, Deb wrote “12 persons from 138th BSF unit Ambassa found COVID-19 positive. Total #COVID19 positive cases in Tripura stands at 16 (2 already discharged, so active cases:14).”

In the same tweet, Deb urged the people not to panic and to follow the Government prescribed guidelines. “We are working vigilantly for your safety”, he added.

The contagion was first detected among jawans in Tripura yesterday when two soldiers from the same battalion had tested positive. The suspected carrier, a head constable, hails from Sivasagar district in Assam.

On April 26, he got admitted to Dhalai district hospital with complaints of stomachache, and was referred to the GBP hospital in Agartala on May 1.
