Breaking: 4 held for smuggling banned narcotics in Guwahati city

GUWAHATI: In a significant development, Assam Police today seized a large consignment of banned narcotics in Guwahati city under Kamrup (metro) district.

Acting on a tip off, a CID team intercepted a Mini truck in Beharbari area under Basista Police Station in Guwahati city at around 12:45 pm that was loaded with 20 cartons of prohibited cough syrup (brand name "ESKUF") containing 160 bottles per carton.

Accordingly, police seized the consignment on the spot in presence of independent witnesses by observing required formalities. 4 persons have been picked up for further interrogation and necessary legal action in connection to the seizure.

The arrested persons have been identified as Jayanta Kumar Rajbongshi (42), Anath Bondhu Bhattacharjee (34), Debajyoti Das(29) and 4) Raju Kangkha Banik (32).

In the same operation, on being led by the above accused, the said team of CID recovered and seized another 40 cartons containing the same kind of narcotics in Guwahati from one of the rooms of a mud house located at Kali Mandir Path in Beharbari under the same police station.

"The total seizure is of 9,600 bottles packed in 60 cartons. The estimated market value of the seized consignment of prohibited cough syrup is Rs. 30 lakhs (approx)," an official said.

A case is being registered at CID Police Station in connection to the seizure.
