Aizawl: A 62-year-old man in Mizoram has died due to COVID-19 in Mizoram today, becoming the first casualty of the disease from the Northeast Indian State. The first COVID-19 related mortality in Mizoram comes as a huge shock to the entire state.

A source informed Inside Northeast that the deceased was a 62-year-old and was admitted to the hospital with existing co-morbid conditions. He was under treatment at the Zoram Medical College (ZMC) in Falkawn for more than 10 days.

The first casualty in the state been reported a day after the government announced that there will be a week-long lockdown in the Aizawl Municipal area to arrest the spread of the COVID-19 virus.

The Mizoram government on Monday also launched ‘Covid-19 No Tolerance Fortnight’ across the state till November 9, a notification said.

The lockdown will begin at 4 am on October 27 and will be withdrawn at the same time on November 3, the statement said.

In a related development, the Mizoram government on Monday decided to set up child-friendly Covid-19 care centres to treat children, who tested positive for COVID-19.

Overall deaths related to the viral disease in India rose to 1.2 lakh on Monday as 508 people died in the 24 hours.
