Breaking: Former Finance Minister Arun Jaitley Admitted to AIIMS

New Delhi, August 9, 2019:

Former finance minister Arun Jaitley was admitted to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in New Delhi this morning. Arun Jaitley was admitted for a medical check-up in the Cardiology department.

Arun Jaitley has been unwell for the last two years. Last year, Arun Jaitley underwent a kidney transplant, following which he was put under isolation.

Arun Jaitley served as the finance minister in the Narendra Modi government's first term in office.

However, due to his poor health, he was forced not to present the Interim Budget in February this year before the Lok Sabha polls.

After the BJP returned to power earlier this year, Jaitley wrote a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi opting out of the new Cabinet citing health concerns. The former finance minister also tweeted a copy of his letter to PM Modi, a day before his oath ceremony.

One of the BJP party’s key members, Prime Minister Modi had given Mr Jaitley charge of three ministries after winning his first term in 2014 — finance, defence and information and broadcasting.

Mr Jaitley’s health issues became worse after he had a kidney transplant in May last year. A diabetic, he also had to skip the interim budget in February when he was in hospital in the US for treatment.
