SHILLONG: Amid the continuing rise in the number of COVID-19 cases in Meghalaya, the government has decided to do away with the safety net of lockdowns in a bid to arrest the spread of the infectious disease.

Owing to the high rate of infections in the state, Lockdown shall be enforced in the Shillong Urban Conglomeratiion from 5 am of June 14 till 5 am of June 21.

The inter-district of intra-district movement to and from Shillong Urban Agglomeration or any other area notified by the DCs will be restricted except for those who fall into the exempted categories.

In East Khasi Hills, both banks and post offices will be allowed to function with limited staff.

Meanwhile, the government has authorized the Deputy Commissioners and the SDO (Civil) to impose lockdowns in their districts or sub-divisions "based on need."

Political, public, social, and religious gatherings shall not be permitted. Conferences, meetings, and trainings shall also not be held.

Inter-state travel is also suspended, with the only exception being transit vehicles from Assam, Tripura, Manipur, and Mizoram.

In regards to commercial establishments, DCs and SDO (Civil) have been authorized to permit the limited opening of commercial establishments "on need basis on local situation."

Meanwhile, the International Border Trade shall also be regulated by the Deputy Commissioners.

Weddings and sports activities shall not be permitted owing to the high risk of transmission.

Yesterday, Meghalaya reported 603 more cases of COVID-19, while 10 more succumbed to the disease. To date, Meghalaya has reported 40,586 cases and 704 deaths. The state presently has 5,015 active cases of COVID-19.
