BREAKING: Manipur boxer Babyrojisana Chanu wins a gold in World Youth Meet

NEW DELHI: Manipur pugilist Naorem Babyrojisana Chanu put up dominating performances to win the 51 kg gold for India on the penultimate day at the 2021 AIBA Youth Men’s and Women’s World Boxing Championships in Kielce, Poland today.

Providing country the perfect start for the day, Asian Youth champion Chanu looked in great touch as she secured a gold with a comfortable 5:0 win against the European junior champion Valeriia Linkova of Russia.

Chanu, who outclassed European Youth champion Alexas Kubicka of Poland 5:0 in the round of eight on Tuesday, floored Italian opponent Lucia Elen Ayari with a unanimous decision of 5:0 in the semifinals yesterday.

Another Manipur boxer, T Sanamacha Chanu is in a gold quest in 75kg category later tonight.

The other Indians who have bagged a gold for the country are Haryana girls Gitika in 48 kg category and Poonam in 57 kg.

Gitika, who came into the final beating two-time European champion Erika Prisciandaro of Italy, blanked out home favourite Natalia Kuczewska of Poland 5:0 in the final.

Poonam also prevailed over French opponent Sthelyne Grosy in unanimous decision.

Vinka (60kg), Arundhati Choudhary (69kg) and Alfiya Pathan (+81kg) will be other Indian women boxers fighting for gold medals later tonight. The only Indian man in the final, Sachin (56kg), will be in action tomorrow.

A 20-member Indian contingent has already created history by bagging as many as 11 medals at the World Championships bettering their previous best of 10 medals in the 2018 edition.

In the men’s section Bishwamitra Chongthom (49kg), Ankit Narwal (64kg) and Vishal Gupta (91kg) won three bronze medals for the country with semifinals finish.
