Breaking: Manipur Media houses stop working, call for emergency meeting tomorrow

IMPHAL: The All Manipur Working Journalists Union and Editors' Guild Manipur have decided to stop working due to what they have termed as an "emergency situation."

 

The AMWJU has called for an emergency meeting tomorrow at 11 am at the Press club for an emergency general body meeting to discuss the issue.

 

The AMWJU requested all concerned members of AMWJU and the Editors' Guild to participate in the emergency general body meeting.

 

"They exactly didn't disclose the reason - but said that an emergency situation has arrived and they have to take the decision," a source informed Inside NE.

This comes after journalist Paojel Chaoba received a notice from the Bharatiya Janata Party-ruled state government under the recently notified Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021.

 

The notice was likely withdrawn after Union Information and Broadcasting Secretary Amit Khare wrote to the Manipur Chief Secretary Rajesh Kumar.

 

Khare stated that Part III of the new rules, under which the district magistrate issued the notice, are to be administered only by the Union ministry of information and broadcasting.

 

Previously, a China-made hand grenade was hurled at the office of the vernacular daily Poknapham at Keishampat in the heart of the Imphal city, triggering strikes and agitations.
