GUWAHATI: After establishing his majority in the Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC), the newly-elected Chief Promod Boro today lamented the "violence" by the Bodoland People's Front (BPF) MCLAs who raised a hue-and-cry in the Secretariat while Boro was taking his oath. The BTC Chief today earned the support of 22 MCLAs belonging to the UPPL-BJP-GSP combine.

BPF leaders, during the Composite Floor Test to prove the majority in the Council, chanted slogans and help up banners decrying the "death of democracy" in the Council. At one point, the proceedings were even adjourned for ten minutes.

"The UPPL-BJP-GSP combine will establish peace, we will forge ahead with all tribes and communities, we will grant equal rights to all, and always keep the poor and downtrodden in our sights," said Boro.

The BTC Chief also alleged that the previous Government in the BTC was an "undemocratic one." "It is to be expected that they would raise such a din. For over 17 years, an undemocratic Government had ruled the BTC. So much of violence and corruption has occurred here. Our goal is to form an administration that unites all tribes and communities and takes them all forward," Boro said.

Boro affirmed that no "undemocratic" process will ever be shown in the Bodoland Territorial Council under the Governance of the new administration, and added that it would treat the people from all 40 Constituencies "equally".

The much-awaited voting for the BTC began on December 7 with over 77.01 per cent voters exercising their franchise in the first phase of polling for 21 seats in Udalguri and Baksa districts, where 130 candidates have contested.

A total of 23,87,422 voters in the two phases exercised their franchise to elect their representatives for the local council, formed in 2003 and elections being held since 2005.
