GUWAHATI: United People's Party Liberal (UPPL) led by Promod Boro is continuing its strong showing in the early rounds of voting in the Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) polls. As per the latest, BTC election update, the Promod Boro led outfit has now leaped ahead in 23 of the 40 Constituencies in the region.

Meanwhile, the Bodoland People's Front (BPF) party is leading in 8 Constituencies, while the BJP is leading in 6 Seats. The saffron party's leaders -- especially Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma -- campaigned extensively in the region ahead of the polls.

In these initial stages, it is believed that the anti-incumbency factor is playing a major role in the fourth election in the Council, which seems to have hurt Hagrama Mohilary's re-election chances. Moreover, UPPL Chief Promod Boro's assertions that the Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR) treaty will be implemented in letter and spirit if a new regime takes over, seems to have proved to be a popular ticket.

A total of 23,87,422 voters in the two phases exercised their franchise. The BTR election was earlier scheduled to be held on April 4 but postponed due to COVID-19. Assam Governor Jagdish Mukhi took the charge of the council after five-year term of BTC ended in April.
