KOKRAJHAR: Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR) Promod Boro today heavily condemned the thrashing of a doctor at the hands of a mob in Central Assam's Hojai district on Tuesday.

"It is extremely unfortunate and I condemn it. An act like this cannot be accepted during a crisis period," Bodo told scribes, adding that "stern action" should be taken against the perpetrators.

Boro also called on the state government to ensure that such episodes do not recur in the times to come.

It needs mention here that a mob assaulted Seuj Kumar Senapati, the doctor, and other staff of the Udali CCC on Tuesday at a COVID Care Centre in Udali besides damaging the facility.

A video on the incident circulated via social media showed the mob kicking and hitting the doctor on his head with medical equipment.

The attackers had alleged negligence by the doctor and his medical team for the death of one Giyasuddin who was admitted to the CCC after testing COVID-19 positive.

According to Senapati, the relatives told him that the patient was serious but when he examined his health condition, he found him to be already dead.

The mob soon converged on him and thrashed him mercilessly, while also damaging hospital equipment.

The outpatient department at the Gauhati Medical College Hospital and other government healthcare facilities were closed from 8 a.m. to 1.30 p.m. on Wednesday to protest the incident.

24 persons, including a woman, have been arrested as the main perpetrators of the attack before dawn on Wednesday.
