BTR Election Update: UPPL leading in 23 Constituencies, BJP establishes lead in 10

GUWAHATI: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is all set to make serious inroads in the Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) time around, as the saffron power is now leading in 10 of the 40 Constituencies. The Promod Boro-led United People's Party, however, continues to hold onto the massive lead as is now leading in 23 of the Constituencies, as per the latest BTR election update.

The biggest story of the election so far is the dismal showing by the Bodoland People's Front (BPF) which formed the Government in the troubled region for 3 successive terms. As per the latest BTR election update, the BPF is leading in only 5 Constituencies.

The Congress-AIUDF coalition and Naba Sarania's Gana Suraksha Party (GSP) are leading in single Seats.

The voting for the BTC election was held in two phases -- on December 7 and 10. The turnout was registered at 77.01% in the first phase, while the turnout was 78% in the second round of voting, reports said.

A total of 23,87,422 voters in the two phases exercised their franchise. The BTR election was earlier scheduled to be held on April 4 but postponed due to COVID-19. Assam Governor Jagdish Mukhi took the charge of the council after five-year term of BTC ended in April.

The counting of votes is underway in ten subdivisional headquarters in Kokrajhar, Chirang, Baksa and Udalguri districts Kokrajhar, Gossaigaon, Chirang, Bijni, Tamulpur, Parbatjhora, Bhergaon, Mushalpur, and Udalguri, Salbari. Meanwhile, tight security arrangements have been made at all counting centers.
