Diphu, February 25, 2020:

Opposing the Government's move to implement the Citizenship Amendment Act (or CAA), Karbi Students' Association (KSA) leader Semson Teron termed it as a "conspiracy" to "blind" the people of Karbi Anglong.

Talking to Inside Northeast, Teron opined that even though the Karbi Anglong area has been exempted from the purview of the CAA after protests by the indigenous tribal populace, the locals still fear that the Act's effects on Assam could cause grave harm to the Karbis. "Look, Karbi Anglong is still very much a part of Assam. If the limbs of a human are cut off, it would affect the whole body. The situation with Assam, Karbi Anglong, and the CAA, is something similar.."

Slamming Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC) CEM for his flip-flopping stance on the 'CAA', Teron said, "Look, our CEM, Tuliram Ronghang, called on Union Home Minister Amit Shah, urging him to exempt the Karbi-dwelling areas from the purview of the CAA. Again, the same Tuliram was seen participating in a BJP rally supporting the same Act in Jagiroad. This begs the question: what is Tuliram's actual stance regarding the CAA? He should clarify."

Samson also revealed that among the Karbis, there is a rising apprehension advanced people from neighboring countries will come and they will have to duke it out with them for land and resources. "If the CAA leads to an influx of Bengalis...where will that leave us Karbis? They are an advanced people, and thus, I believe that we will be overpowered by them. Thus, we are vehemently opposed to the CAA that seeks to alienate us in our own lands", the student leader told us.
