CAA is Based on Mahatma Gandhi's Principles, Claims PM Modi

New Delhi, December 22, 2019:

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on Sunday said that the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) was inspired by Mahatma Gandhi’s thoughts and that it was not his own ‘brainchild’.

While speaking at a gathering at New Delhi’s Ramlila Maidan, Modi explained the rationale behind the Citizenship law that aims to offer nationality to non-Muslims from Bangladesh, Pakistan and Afghanistan.

He said, “This law is not Modi’s brainchild. It is inspired by Mahatma Gandhi’s thoughts. Gandhiji had said that whenever Hindus and Sikhs in Pakistan want to come back to India, they will be welcome.”

The Prime Minister urged the people to “at least follow Gandhi” and accept the new Citizenship law. “Those opposing the law don't want to listen to Modi, but at least follow Gandhi,” he added.

Earlier, the Governor of Kerala, Arif Mohammad Khan said that the CAA has been brought in place for fulfilling the promises made by Mahatma Gandhi and the first Prime Minister of India, Jawaharlal Nehru to the victims of partition who were suffering religious persecution in Pakistan.

“We have never questioned or discriminated people based on their religion. Hindus, Muslims, Sikhs, Christians all were benefitted by the unauthorized colonies Bill, everyone who lives here was benefited. Why did we do this? Because we live for the love of the country.”
