Varanasi, February 17, 2020:

Addressing a massive public rally at his Lok Sabha Constituency (Varanasi) on Sunday, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi ruled out a rethink on the Citizenship (Amendment) Act or CAA and abrogation of Article 370.

The PM also said that his party, the BJP, will remain steadfast in its resolve to implement these policies, despite widespread protests against the CAA and Article 370.

PM Modi said that be it the scrapping of Article 370 from Jammu and Kashmir or the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), the country waited for decisions on these for years. He further went on to add that these decisions were necessary in the "interest of the nation."

Provisions of Article 370 of the Constitution, which accorded special powers to the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir, were abrogated by the government in August last year.

Meanwhile, the BJP-led Government's amendment of the Citizenship Act has been met with widespread protests. In Assam, especially, where the protests took a violent turn after 5 youths were killed, the CAA is seen as a major threat. Although the Government has exempted tribal-inhabited 6th Schedule and ILP regime areas from the purview of the Act, people continue to be up-in-arms against it.

In the same rally, the PM said that a trust has been set up for the construction of a Ram temple in Ayodhya in the wake of the SC's landmark judgment and asserted that it would work “rapidly”.
