Guwahati, December 17, 2019:

The Citizenship Amendment Act that was enacted recently after it cleared both the Houses of the Parliament continues to rock the nation with protests. Meanwhile, students from internationally renowned Universities such as Oxford and Harvard, have also joined in the protests.

After the uprisings that began in the Northeastern region of India, and spread to other parts of the country like a wildfire, the sustained and widespread protests against the C(A)A are continuing unabated in many parts of the world.

In Assam, where the agitation took its current form, the protesters are adopting non-violent and democratic means to urge the Government to roll back the contentious legislation.

Today, on the 2nd day of the Gana Satyagraha of the All Assam Students' Union, protesters from many parts of the state, such as Moran, Tinsukia, Guwahati, took to the streets in great numbers to express their resentment against the Bill-turned-Act.

Over 400 students from different US universities have issued a joint statement expressing solidarity with Jamia and AMU students lathi-charged by the Delhi Police during protests against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act that turned violent.

In the statement, scholars from universities, including Harvard, Yale, Columbia, Stanford and Tufts said they condemn the “brutal police violence unleashed against students at Jamia and AMU as a gross violation of human rights under the Constitution of India and international human rights law”. The students and scholars at Oxford University also  staged a protest march to India House in London against the Citizenship Amendment Act and the police action on students.
