Guwahati: Days before Assam heads to the polling booths to elect it's next government, state BJP chief Ranjeet Kumar Dass said that the party will soon implement the contentious Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA).

Dass yesterday revealed that the BJP leaders are keeping a distance from the issue of CAA, as after its approval from Parliament, Assam witnessed a wave of protests.

Stating that the party still "stands by it", he said if voted back to power, the CAA will be implemented as "there is no question of going back."

Asked about Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s promises that they will not allow CAA to be implemented in Assam, Dass said: “I can bet that Rahul Gandhi doesn’t know anything about CAA. Even our booth level workers know more about CAA than Gandhi.”

Exuding confidence that the controversial act will have no bearing on the result of the polls, he added, "CAA issue had cropped up even during the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, but the BJP succeeded in increasing its tally from seven to nine seats."

People in Assam are convinced that not a single foreigner can illegally settle in Assam as long as the BJP is in power in the state, he added.

Assembly elections for 126 seats in Assam will be held in three phases starting from March 27 and the counting of votes will take place on May 2.

Meanwhile, Union Home Minister Amit Shah has said the core of BJP's manifesto in West Bengal is based on 'Sonar Bangla' and if voted to power the party will ensure a state free of violence. He said that CAA will be implemented in the first Cabinet and refugees who have been staying here for 70 years will be given citizenship. Each family will get Rs 10,000 per year for 5 years.

According to the manifesto, PM Kisan Samman Nidhi Yojana will be extended to Bengal and Rs 18,000 will be transferred to 7.5 million farmers' bank accounts.

3 new AIIMS hospitals will be built in North Bengal, Jangalmahal and Sundarban.
