Guwahati, March 31, 2019:

One of the founding fathers of the Asom Gana Parishad and former Chief Minister of Assam, Prafulla Kumar Mahanta, was taken aback when the AGP resumed their alliance with the BJP party. Mahanta said that he only found out about it on the media and since then, has refrained from campaigning for any candidate.

To his credit, though, Mahanta has maintained his anti-Citizenship (Amendment) Bill stance unlike his party peers Atul Bora, Keshav Mahanta and Phani Bhusan Mahanta who resumed Ministerial duties after formerly resigning during the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill fracas.

Mahanta, while addressing the media on Saturday, has again criticized the Bill and alleged that the “bill would damage Assam’s secular fabric.” He has further urged the people of Assam to vote for candidates who oppose the Bill.

Mahanta also lashed out at Prime Minister Narendra Modi and slammed him for his failure in solving the issue of illegal migration. “Modi signed the Indo-Bangla land boundary agreement. Modi had said that there will be no infiltrators in Assam if he comes to power in 2014; the CAB has been introduced by his party”, he said.
