GUWAHATI: In a bid to ensure free, fair and safe election in Assam, the Election Commission of India is maintaining a round-the-clock vigilance to enforce it’s expenditure-monitoring directions.

 

The agencies have seized cash to the tune of Rs 12.17 crore, liquor worth Rs 17.82 crore, gold and silver ornaments worth Rs 2.82 crore, drugs valued at Rs 27.13 crore and contraband tablets worth Rs 4.88 crore from various parts of the poll-bound state.

 

On the other hand, police also recovered a huge cache of arms and ammunition in Kokrajhar on March 14. The recovery includes two AK 56 rifles, two AK magazines, 29 rounds of bullets and a revolver.

Ever since election in the state has been announced on February 26 this year, different agencies including the Assam Police, State Excise Department, Income Tax Department, Directorate of Revenue Intelligence, Narcotics Control Bureau, Flying Squads, Static Surveillance Teams and other regulatory agencies have detected several suspicious movement of cash, liquor, valuables, narcotics and other items across the state.

 

Elections to the 126 member Assam assembly will be held in three phases in the state. The first phase will be held on March 27 which will see polling for 47 constituencies, second phase will be held on April 1 for 39 seats and the remaining 40 seats will go for polls on April 6. Results will be declared on May 2.
