The Central Board of Secondary Education or the CBSE has decided to promote all the students from Classes 1 to 8 to the next grade and those studying in Classes 9, 10 and 11 will be promoted to the next grade on the basis of internal assessments of schools.

The CBSE has made this announcement as a precautionary measure and in compliance of the instructions received from the Secretary, Department of Higher Education/ School Education and Literacy, Government of India.

Terming it a one-time measure, CBSE states, "All students studying in classes 1 to 8 maybe promoted to the next class/grade. This advisory is being issued in consultation with NCERT."

Schools affiliated to CBSE that have completed their examination, evaluation and promotion such as the Kendriaya Vidyalayas, Navodaya Vidyalayas, State/UT government schools, private schools, schools located in India and abroad, etc. have been advised to promote students of grades 9 and 11 to the next grades on the basis of all the school-based assessments including project work, periodic tests, term exams, etc. conducted so far.

Minister of Human Resource Development, Ramesh Pokhriyal took to Twitter and posted, “In view of the current situation due to Covid 19, I have advised CBSE to promote ALL students studying in classes I-VIII to the next class/grade.”

The Class 10 and 12 Board examinations will be conducted in 29 papers. “Due to the ongoing #COVID19 situation and keeping in mind the academic future of students, I have advised CBSE to conduct board examinations only for 29 main subjects that are required for promotion & maybe crucial for admissions in HEIs,” tweeted the HRD minister.

Earlier, similar steps were taken by the Kendriya Vidyalaya, and state boards like Chhattisgarh, Delhi, Gujarat, which went for mass promotion of students of classes 1 to 8, 9 and 11.

The CBSE further stated, " at this stage it is difficult for the Board to decide and announce the new schedule for examinations. However, it is informed that any decision that the board will take with regard to the conduct of examinations will be taken by undertaking extensive consultation with higher education authorities and by keeping all aspects related to entrance exams, admissions dates, etc. in mind. In this context, it is further informed that the Board will give notice of about 10 days to all stakeholders before starting the Board examinations."
