Centre Constitutes Delimitation Commission to 'Readjust' Assam, Arunachal, Manipur, Nagaland & Jammu

New Delhi, March 6, 2020:

The Centre government has constituted the delimitation commission for the purpose of delimitation or in other words, readjustment of the Assembly and parliamentary constituencies in Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Nagaland and Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir.

Justice (Retd) Ranjana Prakash Desai is the Chairperson of the delimitation commission. Election Commissioner, Sushil Chandra and the Election Commissioners of the States, wherein the delimitation exercise is to be carried out, will be the members of the Commission formed the central government.

It may be mentioned here that the Centre has given a nod to the delimitation exercise in Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur and Nagaland citing improvement in the law and order situation in the states since February, 2008, when the order was deferred.

The Ministry of Law and Justice has issued a notification citing, “And whereas the Delimitation Commission completed the delimitation exercise and the Delimitation Order, 2008 in respect of all States, except Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur and Nagaland, was published on 26th November, 2008.”

It stated that the delimitation exercise was postponed “on being satisfied that a situation had arisen where the unity and integrity of India was likely to be threatened and there was serious threat to the peace and public order.”
