Centre, World Bank, Nagaland govt sign $68 mn deal to enhance education in Nagaland

DIMAPUR: The Government of India, Nagaland government, and the World Bank have signed a $68 million project to improve education the governance of schools across the state, and to enhance teaching practices and learning environments in select schools.

The project would improve instruction in the classroom, create opportunities for the professional development of teachers and develop technology systems to provide more access to blended and online learning for students and teachers, as well as enable better monitoring of policies and programmes.

The statewide reforms in schools would help about 1.5 lakh students and 20,000 teachers in the government education system in Nagaland.

Ministry of finance, CS Mohapatra said that the education project in Nagaland will resolve the critical gaps that students and teachers face and would play an important role in the state's development.

The agreement was signed by Mohapatra on behalf of the Indian government; Junaid Ahmad, Country Director, India on behalf of the World Bank, and Shanavas C, Principal Director, department of School Education on behalf of the Nagaland govt.

Approximately 15 out of the 44 higher secondary schools in Nagaland will be built into school complexes that during the project time will operationalize the planned learning environment.

The $68 million loan from the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD), has a final maturity of 14.5 years with a five-year grace period.
