Chandan Brahma tops as Assam’s wealthy MLAs’ assets grew by 95% between 2011 and 2016

GUWAHATI: The assets of at least 34 MLAs of Assam assembly who were re-elected in the 2016 elections grew by 95 per cent from 2011 when they were elected to the 14th Assam Assembly.

The average assets of the re-elected 34 wealthy people’s representatives stood at Rs 3.04 crore with BPF MLA Chandan Brahma topping the list with a growth of 268 per cent. The average assets of the 34 rich people were Rs 1.56 crore in 2011.

According to an Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) report released this afternoon, Sidli MLA Brahma, who is the current tourism and culture minister, has declared an increase of Rs 6.97 crore i.e.,  from Rs 2.60 crore in 2011 to Rs 9.58 crore in 2016.

Jamunamukh’s All India United Democratic Front MLA Abdur Rahim Ajmal has declared their possession of highest asset of about Rs 13.11 crore which was an increased of Rs 6.26 crore, from Rs 6.84 crore in 2011.

Congress MLA from Laharighat Nazrul Islam has declared the third highest assets growth of Rs 3.33 crore, from Rs 2.58 crore in 2011, followed closely behind by finance minister Himanta Biswa Sarma declaring a 108 per cent growth of Rs 3.32 crore over Rs 3.06 crore in 2011 to be worth Rs 6.38 crore in 2016, the report said.

Former chief minister Prafulla Kumar Mahanta stood fifth in the list with a growth of Rs 3.05 crore to make his total assets worth Rs 7.92 crore.
