Children Excluded from NRC not to be Sent to Detention Centres: AG KK Venugopal

Guwahati, January 6, 2020:

The Attorney General of India KK Venugopal has assured that the children who were left out of the final publication of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) in Assam but their parents were included in the same, will not be sent to detention centres.

Venugopal told a Bench of Supreme Court comprising Chief Justice SA Bobde, BR Gavai and Surya Kant that the children will not be separated from their families.

The Court has issued a notice to the Union of India and the State of Assam on this plea and sought a reply within four weeks. In an undertaking, Venugopal stated, “…that the children of parents who have been given citizenship through NRC, will not be separated from their parents and sent to detention centre in Assam pending decision of this application,” adding, “…seeks four weeks’ time to file reply to the instant application.”
