China to Partner with Myanmar on ‘Belt & Road Initiative’

New Delhi, January 16, 2020:

China has planned to partner with Myanmar on the former’s flagship campaign, Belt & Road Initiative, which is also called the 21st Century Silk Road.

President Xi Jinping has scheduled his visit to Myanmar on Friday to sign massive infrastructure deals. According to analysts, Jinping would tap into the opportunity to revive the multi-billion-dollar infrastructure projects that are central to the Belt & Road Initiative.

The China President will meet the state counselor Aung San Suu Kyi, army chief Min Aung Hlaing and other leaders of Myanmar in Naypyitaw to discuss the China-Myanmar relations.

It may be mentioned here that the China President’s visit to Myanmar has come days after Aung San Suu Kyi defended the Myanmar Army at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) on matters of Rohingya Muslims’ ethnic cleansing from Rakhine state.

World leaders will be closely monitoring the meet and relations between the two countries. China had also defended Myanmar on the global stage and is viewed as the biggest obstacle to a prosecution of its leaders at an international war crimes tribunal.

China is also one of the major investors in Myanmar. China’s Vice Foreign Minister Luo Zhaohui said that the purpose of Xi Jinping’s visit was to strengthen relations, deepen Belt and Road co-operation and materialize the China-Myanmar Economic Corridor.
