Chitrangadha Singh dons Assamese Mekhela Chadar on National Handloom Day

Bollywood actress Chitrangadha Singh paid a special tribute to the handloom workers of Assam by donning a traditional Assamese Mekhela Chadar on Saturday on the occasion of National Handloom Day.

GUWAHATI: Bollywood actress Chitrangadha Singh paid a special tribute to the handloom workers of Assam by donning a traditional Assamese Mekhela Chadar on Saturday on the occasion of National Handloom Day.

Wearing a stunning pearl white Mekhela Chadar designed by popular designer Sanjukta Dutta, Singh said, "I didn't know that it takes around 20-15 days to create a piece like this".

Appreciating the hard work of the artisans, Singh lauded the designer and her initiative to support nearly 100 artisans to keep the tradition alive.

Speaking about the association actress Chitrangadha Singh said “Handloom has always been my favorite and I wear it regularly. It was a total delight to wear this beautifully made Mekhela Chador designed by Sanjukta which takes 20-25 days and the hard work of 100 workers to make one single piece of the mekhela chador.

She further added “I wish Sanjukta the best for the future to continue her amazing work in helping preserve the heritage and through her art keep supporting such valuable causes.”

Responding to the actress, Designer Sanjukta Dutta said, “It’s lovely to work with the beautiful Chitrangadha Singh. She is looking so stunning in the Mekhela Chador. It gives all the artisans and weavers a lot of courage when they see their work getting recognition by such known celebrities".

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma too appreciated the efforts of the waevers on the occasion of the National Handloom Day. Taking to Twitter, the Chief Minister tweeted, "Assam is proud of its handloom heritage and many of our ethnic garments have stood the test of time. On
