GOSSAIGAON: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma today visited the Gossaigaon constituency to campaign for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJPs) ally United Peoples’ Party Liberal (UPPL) candidate Jiron Basumatary for the upcoming Assam Assembly by-polls scheduled for October 30, 2021.

By-polls will be held for a total of five constituencies–Gossaigaon, Tamulpur, Bhabanipur, Mariani, and Thowra.

Campaigning for Jiron Basumatary who is a member of the Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC), an autonomous council for the Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR), CM Sarma urged the voters of Gossaigaon to vote for Basumatary for the all-round development of the constituency and the region.

The UPPL has filed candidates for the Gossaigaon and Tamulpur assembly constituencies.

The Gossaigaon seat fell vacant after MLA Majendra Narzary died due to post-COVID complications in May this year.

The Tamulpur seat fell vacant after the UPPL MLA from the constituency, Lehoram Boro, died of COVID-19 in May 2021.

The party nominated Jiron Basumatary for the Gossaigaon and Jolen Daimary for Tamulpur constituency.

As Assam has a total number of 126 constituencies in the legislative assembly, if BJP crosses the magic number of 64 alone after this by-election then it will become the only dominating political party in the house and will be able to free themselves from the alliance, with UPPL and Asom Gana Parishad, if wanted.

The by-elections for the vacant Majuli seat, which was left vacant for the AJP, have yet to be scheduled because its representative, Union minister Sarbananda Sonowal, resigned from the assembly hours after the Election Commission announced the poll schedule.

Counting of votes will be held on November 2 and the full election process will be concluded by November 5.
