Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma celebrates Rakshabandhan

GUWAHATI: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma observed the festival of Rakshabandhan which honours the beautiful relationship between brothers and sisters.

CM Himanta Biswa Sarma celebrated Rakshabandhan with sisters from various walks of life in Guwahati.

Rakshabandhan:

This festival honours a brother's love for his sister and is held on the full moon day of the Hindu month of Sravana (July/August).

On this day, sisters tie rakhi around their brothers' wrists to protect them from evil influences and to wish them a long and happy life.

In a ritual that reaffirms her brother's bond and support, a girl or woman applies a tilak to his forehead and ties a rakhi around his wrist.

Sisters receives a gift from her brothers which traditionally entails them taking on the responsibility of caring for her.

History of Rakshabandhan: 

Rakshabandhan's origins can be traced back to Hindu mythology. According to Hindu mythology, in the great Indian epic Mahabharata, Draupadi, wife of the Pandavas, tore the corner of her sari to prevent Lord Krishna's wrist from bleeding (he had inadvertently hurt himself).

Thus,a bond similar to that of a brother and sister, and he promised to protect her.
