Guwahati, January 19, 2019:

Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal has pleaded the All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) and Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) to support the decision of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to pass the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016 as a protective guard for the indigenous people of Assam.

According to CM Sonowal, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has made tremendous effort to safeguard the Axomiya community by introducing the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016 in the Parliament.

Claiming that only the Bill can safeguard the “Axomiya Jaati”, Sonowal said , “The idea that has been laid down that the Bill will destroy the indigenous community is totally wrong. The Bill will protect the people by providing safeguard with reservations in socio-cultural, traditional, political grounds and even employment of the youth. So I wholeheartedly appeal the AASU, who played a major role in Assam agitation, to understand the need of the Bill and join us.”

“We have fighting for our rights from the past 39 years, however, we cannot continue it for long. Our Jaati, Maati, Bhati has not been protected yet. For instance, as per the 2011 census, we have lost our districts one by one. The responsible citizens must understand the very requirement of the Bill. Along with AASU, I also appeal the AGP and all the people to become united in support of the Bill.”

It may be mentioned that the people of Assam including intellectuals, writers, lawyers and even many politicians from both opposition and BJP party have protested against the amendment of the Bill.
