MARIANI: The All Assam Tea Students Association (AATSA), Mariani branch, has filed a case against new BJP's Rupjyoti Kurmi , from the constituency, over alleged violation of COVID-19 protocols amid a spike of cases in the district.

A complaint has been lodged against Kurmi at the Mariani Police Station.

The Jorhat district along with the other six districts of Assam has been under full containment zone due to a surge in COVID-19 infection.

AATSA have alleged that Rupjyoti Kurmi, who has joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) last month has held mass rallies with more than 250 people in tea garden areas by violating the Assam government's Disaster Management Act 2005.

Adviser of AATSA from Mariani, Deepak Tanti said, "The public representative hasn't given a single thought to follow Covid-19 rules. In a display of power, he has rallied with those people who have less knowledge of the way the virus spreads.”

He further said, "The rules should be equal for everyone, be it general public, politician, or government employees. We totally condemn the act of Rupjyoti Kurmi and hope that the government will take appropriate action against it."

AATSA has claimed that the rallies were also joined by the State Power Minister Bimal Bora. A few days back, Kurmi was severely slammed for holding a football match in his constituency defying Covid rules.
